My expectations going in were very low (see my other reviews of ROH shows she has done by clicking her name amongst the labels at the bottom) hence my surprise that I enjoyed part of her performance.Capricciohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11066947469648187572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998744234538946992.post-31718663957684925972013-10-23T17:15:30.510+01:002013-10-23T17:15:30.510+01:00I know she is largely 'home grown', coming...I know she is largely 'home grown', coming through the Young Artists Scheme, but Poplavskaya seems increasing ill at ease in major roles and maybe her abilities should be judged more dispassionately by those running the company. I think this review, though critical, is too kind. She produced some horribly flat singing in the earlier acts; her coloratura was often rough and approximate; and there were some excruciatingly botched top notes that are not worthy of one of the world's major houses.handel21https://www.blogger.com/profile/11314637802431442254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998744234538946992.post-56771003343532956212013-10-23T01:14:51.730+01:002013-10-23T01:14:51.730+01:00I think you have misunderstood my point - the ques...I think you have misunderstood my point - the question is why do WE as an audience go to the opera? What are WE using the experience for? How does the opera's narrative relate to the narratives that WE tell about ourselves?Capricciohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11066947469648187572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998744234538946992.post-28871622005041585082013-10-23T00:59:59.046+01:002013-10-23T00:59:59.046+01:00"Herheim is particularly interested in making..."Herheim is particularly interested in making us question why we go to the opera"

----

Assuming that Herheim was seriously mindless enough to put forward that thoroughly irrelevant and imbecile rhetorical question in the matter of an opera - any opera - the answer is manifestly clear and always the same: because the opera's creator (i.e., the composer) chose to create his/her opera using that particular story as its framework.

Period. Full stop.

See now how that works in opera, Mr. Herheim?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280016214367182noreply@blogger.com
